Human Resource has always been a concern among retailers. Whether it is finding the right person for the job or be it retaining their workforce, retailers have always searched for right solutions to tackle this problem. Managing the workforce is still largely an ignored area.
The attrition rates are soaring and retail is also not untouched by this phenomenon. Some of the factors cited are:
- Lack of professional support: Professional support from both ends, either the manager or the employee under him has to be there but sometimes there are certain attitude problems which could arise due to the supervisor’s behaviour or the employee’s attitude towards work. In such a case there could be a discord between the management and the employees which could hamper the working of the organization too and may prompt the employees to leave the organization. The management has to get to the root of the problem, talk to the employees facing or having such a problem and counsel them to change their behaviour so the work environment becomes more conducive.
- Work environment: A dull environment at the workplace makes the employees to feel the same about their work as well and if the work demands them to work on the weekends, this may overstress them. The employees won't be left with no time for leisure activities which could otherwise are a major stressbusters. Such conditions can prompt them to search for another job and make them quit.
- Extensive pressure on executives: Putting a lot of work load on talented executives may again make the employees to leave their current jobs and look for another job which would help them balance their personal and professional life.
- Better packages and incentives somewhere else: Sometimes money is also a criteria for switching jobs. Better salaries and better package may lure the employees to leave their present jobs.
